Wizard of Oz Cake

Chad has said for a while now that he wants a cake made out of fondant. He even bought me a gift certificate to take a class to figure out how to create such a cake. Well, needless to say I have not taken the class yet. But I figured I'd give it a try and make one for his birthday. So, I spent the day on Saturday creating this masterpiece. I decided it would be a Wizard of Oz cake with the yellow brick road, Emerald castle and the poppies field. So I went online to figure out how to create such a thing. I found a recipe for a peanut butter pound cake (you have to use a sturdy cake) and chocolate butter cream frosting. I then went to Iparty and JoAnn Fabrics and bought what I thought I would need to create this cake. I went to Home Depot to buy PVC piping to create the Emerald castle. And then I kicked Chad out of the kitchen. I did ask Chad to cut the PVC piping for me with a saw...he thought I was crazy.

My steps....
1. Make from scratch the cake, pour into two 8 in cake pans, and bake for 70 minutes.
2. Cool cake, cut off tops and make from scratch the chocolate buttercream frosting.
3. Stack the layers and frost the cake.
4. Color white fondant with green food coloring (in a gel)...regular foodcoloring has too much water in it.
5. Roll out fondant, put on cake.
6. Roll out yellow fondant for brick road, cover PVC piping with green fondant (rolled in edible glitter)
7. Draw bricks on road with edible markers.
8. Create poppies with pink frosting and red gel
9. Borrow figurines from a display of Chad's, put on Candles from Erica.
10. Go get Chad......He loved it!
We haven't eaten it yet...except for the pieces I cut off and leftover frosting...both were delicious....
Here are some pictures of the process!
